The surface layer of the skin is usually well lubricated, but oil production may not be sufficient. Repetitive showers, the use of dry soaps or the dry air of homes are the main causes of dry skin. By preserving its moisture, moisturizers usually remedy the problem. You can also try one of the following remedies.
What you can do to treat your dry skin
- Hydrate her with milk. The lactic acid in the milk exfoliates the surface layer of the skin, eliminates dead cells and could help preserve moisture. Dip a towel in cold milk and apply it to areas where your skin is particularly dry or irritated. Leave on for five minutes then rinse gently, making sure to leave some milk so that the lactic acid continues to act.
- Add two cups of Epsom salt to the bath water. In addition to soaking in this solution, you can rub the roughest parts of your skin with a handful of this salt to exfoliate it. On your face, you can apply a moisturizing mask prepared with the crushed flesh of an avocado. Its oil acts as an emollient and offers the benefits of vitamin E.
- To keep your skin moist, try one of the following products: lanolin (from wool), paraffin gel, mineral oil, peanut oil or even plant shortening, for example, Crisco. Put some on or your skin will be too oily.
- If necessary, change the soap. Give up the deodorizing soap that dries the skin and contains irritating fragrances. Liquid soap is usually softer. Keep it close to the sink and use it to wash your hands.
- Avoid long stays in the shower or bath, which have the effect of depriving the skin of its protective oils. This is also true of very hot water. Limit yourself to 15 minutes and adjust the water temperature so that it is moderately hot.

- Eat fish. Choose fatty fish, such as herring or salmon, and take at least twice a week. They are rich in omega-3, fatty acids that contribute to the health of skin cell membranes. Nuts, avocados and, above all, linseed oil also contain them. Take two tablespoons of it each day and add it to salads or to your morning oatmeal. Since it degrades to less useful compounds when heated, add it to the oatmeal only at the end of cooking.
- Just take your supplements. To keep your skin healthy, take 100 mg of a vitamin B complex daily including thiamine, riboflavin, and pantothenic acid, 15 mg of beta carotene to be divided into a few doses, and 15 mg of zinc.
- Or take a multivitamin supplement. Choose a product containing vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, riboflavin, vitamin B6, folate, zinc, selenium and other minerals in a single capsule.
